Ear acupuncture does help during detoxification. Withdrawal symptoms are mark-edly relieved, increasing the chance of the patient lasting out and staying 'clean'. Then, during the long rehabilitation phase which follows, acupuncture helps to keep the patient off alcohol or drugs by relieving craving, anxiety, worry, nightmares and sleeplessness and thereby preventing a relapse. NADA is a non-confrontational treatment which allows patients to get insights into themselves and bit by bit to get through the difficult phases of rehabilitation with less pain than would otherwise be the case. Patients control their own treatment. They can 'dose' themselves with acu-puncture, have as intensive or mild a programme as they choose and break off when they want to. The NADA programme creates a daily structure, providing a pleasant scheduled activity that gives calm and focus, and makes it easier for the patient to fol-low the rest of the rehabilitation programme. The NADA programme also provides treatment in the case of relapse, encouraging patients to return to the rehabilitation plan as soon as possible.
